NorCal Arts Job Description - Teaching Artist

Reports to: Outreach Program Director

Fair Labor Standards Act Status: Non-exempt; Part-time

Essential Workforce

Organization Summary: NorCal Arts’ (NorCal) mission is to provide holistic arts training programs, supporting young artists from diverse communities to create, express, and participate in theater arts, music and/or dance educational opportunities. Through arts engagement, students are empowered to embrace social-emotional learning strategies and advocacy while creating a positive mindset towards themselves and their community.

Position Summary: As a part-time position, our Teaching Artists report to the Outreach Program Director, who all work as a team to create safe learning environments that foster each child’s personal and social development. To succeed, our Teaching Artists play a critical role in the success of the Outreach programs. Teaching Artists are responsible for collaborating with the classroom teacher or with the after-school site lead (depending on the NorCal Program). Candidates must be committed to participating in paid professional development opportunities as an arts practitioner and educator and to participate in NorCal’s community events. NorCal provides ongoing paid training designed to optimize the support Teaching Artists give within the classroom or after-school program. Topics include classroom management skills, trauma informed practices, supporting English Language Learners (ELL’s) in the classroom, and social emotional learning strategies.

Compensation Range: $55/hour, training and prep time $16.50/hour

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Education, Theater Arts) or have reached Senior level of college (some Juniors may be considered);
  • Works primarily at program sites that require candidates to willingly use personal equipment such as cell phone and laptop/tablet;
  • Must have a California Driver’s license, reliable transportation, and auto insurance coverage;
  • Verification of a negative Tuberculosis test;
  • CA Department of Justice criminal background check clearance;
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal background check clearance;
  • Able to exercise judgement for Mandated Reporting;
  • Passion for working with youth.

Desirable Skills & Qualifications:

  • Have cultural competency to work well with people in diverse communities/backgrounds, especially the school environment.
  • Some experience in team building and group dynamics
  • Experience in meeting facilitation, and/or community relations
  • Ability to work independently, be flexible, and manage multiple priorities
  • Work well in a team-oriented environment and maintain harmonious relationships
  • Proficient computer skills, especially using Microsoft Suite or Google Suite (some positions)
  • Detail-oriented
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience with public speaking and presentations
  • English/Spanish bilingual a plus

Candidates’ personal values must align with the vision and values of NorCal Arts in that they are strongly committed to social change through the arts and community engagement and is reflected by their willingness to participate in training provided by NorCal staff and to contribute to the lesson plans provided.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implement NorCal Arts integrated curriculum and contribute to lesson plans to support;
  • Social and emotional development through the arts;
  • Skilled in one or all of the following theatre arts disciplines; acting, spoken word, improvisation, playwriting, movement, dance or music;
  • Guiding students to culminating presentations;
  • Allow students to “share out” what they have learned and reflect on their learning at each workshop;
  • Plan and establish a safe learning environment for all participants and artists;
  • Participate in pre-plan and post-planning meetings with co-teaching artists, NorCal staff, and/or mentors;
  • Document lesson plans and successes and challenges for each session and share with Outreach Director;
  • Report weekly to Outreach Director any concerns including lessons, learning, attendance, and classroom issues;
  • Commit to on-going professional development (training) as an arts practitioner and educator and participate in NorCal training and community events;
  • Submit documents in a timely manner in accordance with NorCal’s Administrative deadlines;
  • Adhere to US and California state and facility guidelines & policies, reporting any incidents or problems;
  • Be a positive role model to students, school staff and fellow Teaching Artists;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to lift, carry and exert up to 25 pounds of force;
  • Capacity to speak clearly with authority;
  • Capacity to work in a noisy environment;
  • Work outdoors exposed to inclement weather;
  • Exposure to bio-hazardous waste (e.g. body fluids);
  • Respond to unpredictable student behaviors;
  • Effectively facilitate stressful situations;
  • Calmly respond to emergency situations.

Schedule

Candidates must be open to working a flexible schedule of a minimum of 3-5 classes weekly. As much as possible we will try to work around college students’ schedules.
